Excitement “Surges” for Wichita Wind Surge Opening Game

WICHITA, Kansas, March 15, 2021— After a year of anticipation, the opening game for the Wichita Wind Surge is scheduled for Tuesday, May 11.  This new minor league team will face their first opponent, the Double-A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Amarillo Sod Poodles from Amarillo, Texas.

“This season is structured differently than in the past,” said Jared Forma, general manager of the Wichita Wind Surge.

On May 4 the Wind Surge’s regular season begins with an away game against the Springfield Cardinals. The Wind Surge will play this Double-A Affiliate team of the St. Louis Cardinals for six continuous days, Tuesday through Sunday. The Wind Surge will receive Monday off, a league-organized rest day, and return home to face the Amarillo Sod Poodles at Riverfront Stadium, repeating this cycle.

The season has scheduled 120 games, with Wichita hosting 12 games a month and 60 home games at Riverfront Stadium. The season will conclude Sept. 19 against the Arkansas Travelers, the Double-A Affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

Riverfront Stadium will follow Covid-19 health guidelines with limited capacity, social distancing, and mask requirements. Ticket information will be released at a later date.
